Apple, Pear, Avocado and Spinach Detox Smoothie



So it’s january, which means everyone seems to be trying some form of cleanse or diet. If you’re one of these people trying to find a new, healthier you then congratulations! I really hope you’re enjoying a healthy eating lifestyle, filled with all of nature’s goodness and that you’re feeling fantastic about yourself. To help everyone out a little I thought I’d share you one of my favourite cleansing smoothies. It’s lovely and filling, which makes it great for this time of the year when you’re looking for something comforting to battle the cold, grey days! But don’t worry it’s still wonderfully green, detoxifying and healthy beyond belief! It’s like goodness in a glass.

The combination of apple, pear, avocado and spinach might sound a little strange, but together these four beautiful ingredients create an amazing mirage of flavours, with the apple and pear sweetening the veggies. I think the avocado initially puts some people off – I guess maybe it sounds like a weird smoothie ingredient – but as you all know I use avocado in everything, as it makes a fantastically creamy, wonderfully healthy substitute for dairy. So here there is no need for any yoghurt, which is awesome.

A glass of this will set you up perfectly for your day, and you’ll feel fantastic. Not only because of all the goodness and nutrition that you’re drinking, but also because there’s always a sense of pride and happiness associated with knowing that you’re doing what you can to look and feel your best. I think consciously looking after your body really instills an awesome sense of pride and self worth, which everyone needs a little extra of most of the time.


Makes 1 large glass

- 2 red apples (they’re sweeter than green)

- 1 pear

- 1 small avocado

- a large handful of fresh spinach leaves

Optional – I always add all of these but they’re not essential

- 1 teaspoon of manuka honey

- 1 teaspoon of hemp protein

- 1 teaspoon of chia seeds

- 1 teaspoon of flax seeds


Simply juice the apples and pear, then add the juice to your blender along with the avocado fresh, spinach leaves and any of the extras that you want. Then blend until smooth. Pour, sip and love. This is going to make you feel beautiful!

    Thank you so much for sharing! I use exactly the same fruit and veg for my favourite smoothie, but I have never thought of adding chia or flax. Well, I know what I am having for breakfast tomorrow…..

      Hi Angie. These kind of fruit and veggie smoothies are great and you can add protein to them by adding things like hemp powder or pea/rice protein powder as well as chia seeds and flax seeds. Hope that helps and your son likes it!

        Haha he was NOT a fan of this. He couldn’t get past the spinach. I said well you will keep trying it till you learn to like it. He has anemia and needs the spinach since no red meat now. I have heard about chia seeds. Those and the flax you just toss in? They grind up well?

          I’m sorry to hear that! Maybe start with less spinach and work your way up? And yes I just toss the chia seeds in, they totally disappear into the smoothie and you’d never know they were there, especially as they don’t have a flavour. Hope you can manage to sneak them in!

    I would just like to say that your recipes are amazing! There are only maybe a handful of places I can find on the web that make gluten free vegan AND raw recipes. I do still enjoy my cooked pasta and hormone free meats ocasionally. ( I’m Portuguese, it’s really hard to fully convert!). Anyways…I love love love what your doing. Keep up the good work :D

      Hi Hannah. I don’t create any specific weight loss recipes as I don’t really believe in dieting like that. If you follow an entirely plant based diet with no refined sugar, processed carbohydrates, dairy or meat you will loose weight and feel amazing!

    Looks great. Now…I don’t have a juicer. Can I add water to the fruit with a blender? Or some kind of juice?

      Hi Rob. The smoothie will change a lot without the fresh juice and I wouldn’t really recommend store brought juice as it’s all pasteurised (heated) so has very little goodness left. Apples can be a bit weird texture wise when smoothied so I think I would leave those out and just blend the pear, avocado and spinach with a little water in a blender, you may want to add some dates to sweeten it as it will be quite savoury without the fresh juice. Hope that helps!

    Hi Ella,
    I’m about to start a detox in order to kickstart a lifetsyle change, and have been reading lots of books on nutrition, including some of the ones on your bookshelf (which is very useful by the way!). I was just wondering how you transitioned from your old diet to the new. Did you do a few days just juicing? Or just raw? Or did you just go straight into eating this way? I really want to do it safely and sensibly, because I know that it can be harmful to try and do it too fast! My health has been a mess and I’m urgent to get started and get it right. Any tips you can give me would be amazing! Thanks.

      Hi. That’s awesome, I’m so glad that you’re starting a lifestyle change – I hope it makes you feel amazing! My advice on your best way to start eating this way would be to just cut out dairy, gluten, sugar, processed food etc – I would do one group and then 3-5 days later the next one and so on. If you’re not used to eating this way then suddenly stopping eating everything you’re used to at once is likely to lead to lots of cravings etc, I think it’s more sustainable to do it over a few weeks and not to do something as drastic as a juice cleanse.       I use spirulina and hemp protein in my morning smoothies and I find they give me great energy – I think they’re the best protein powders around :)

    I made this today, my parents thought I`m crazy. But that doesn’t matter, it tasted amazing and I had so much power and energy for my training session afterwards!
    But I already have difficulties to quit sugar after only two days without it… Today I was invited to a birthday party and everyone dipped their fruit in delicious melted warm chocolate…. But I didn’t even try :)

    What do you use to blend your smoothies? I have a blender & a juicer. My husband and I have stopped using the juicer b/c all the fruit & veggie fiber/pulp gets abandoned. I was going to use the blender but saw your comment above about not using a blender w/ the apples.

      I use a blender to make most of my smoothies but for this one I put the apples and pears through a juicer and then the juice into the blender with the spinach and avocado. Hope that helps!

    Hi Ella,
    I recently found your blog and I’m loving your recipes! I have a quick question about this smoothie. I don’t have a juicer and my Ninja blender is great but if I add an apple to my smootie it leaves a gritty texture. Do you think it would work if I cooked the apples and pear on the stove until they were soft or would that change the flavour?

      You can put the apples and pear in fist with some water and then strain them and add the juice to the smoothie!

      It will be watery like a juice, not a smoothie without the avocado and you quite need the fibre of the avocado to balance the sugar of the fruit

    Tried this Yesterday and tasted better than envisaged! Only drawback was I had to use a spoon as the mixture was too thick to drink! Did you use any extra fluid after mixing?

    I’m having this smoothie right now! It is so good and light! I don’t have juicer so I just used my blender. I peeled the apple and pear and I only has frozen spinach I added a half cup of water and a little bit of honey. But this has to be the best smoothie I have EVER had! Thanks for the recipe!

    Hi :) smoothie’s last at least all morning if you’re not fussed about having the milk cold etc. Otherwise almond milk will be fine all day/overnight in a fridge, and just shake it up before you drink it. x
